Maïa Barouh: A Unique Franco-Japanese Artist

Singer, flutist, songwriter, composer, and arranger, Maïa Barouh is a one-of-a-kind artist who blends ancestral Japanese chants with rap, groove, electro, and chanson, all with remarkable freedom.

HER VOICE

One of her distinctive features is her exceptional vocal technique—largely unknown to the general public—which originates from a small island in southern Japan. She combines this unique skill with her audacious and percussive flute playing.

Born into a musical environment shaped by her father, Pierre Barouh, Maïa began exploring instruments at an early age, with the flute becoming her first “weapon” to navigate her musical career.

UNDERGROUND MUSIC SCENE

She launched her career at 16 in Tokyo’s underground music scene, performing with a variety of groups, from street brass bands to drag queens and exotic dancers. She eventually formed her own band, built around electric bass and percussion, where her voice took center stage. She toured extensively across Japan with this ensemble.

After 11 years in the Japanese music industry, a pivotal collaboration with renowned producer Martin Meissonnier brought her to Paris, where they created the album Kodama. This project led to a five-year tour across Europe and set the stage for her latest endeavor, AIDA: an album that delves into her Franco-Japanese identity through its lyrics and sound.

SHOW

With her vast stage experience, boundless energy, volcanic intensity, and genre-defying musicality, Maïa Barouh transports audiences to the heart of her roots. In her performances, melancholy meets trance, percussion intertwines with electronic music, and rap melds with ancestral singing. Her gripping voice leaves an indelible mark on all who hear it.

The show will take place at the Le St-John an architectural gem built between 1882-85 and transformed into a hub for the arts and culture.
