Visitors are invited to explore the locations that inspired the successful novels such as The Brutal Telling, Still Life, How the Light Gets In, Dead Cold, and other books.

THE THREE PINES INSPIRATIONAL TRAIL

Hop on board a luxury 8-passenger minivan and discover the inspiring locations located in our beautiful region!

  • Chapter 1 – The inspiration for A Beautiful Mystery, the Saint-Gilbert-entre-les-Loups Monastery is a beautiful site, overlooking a grand lake, surrounded by gorgeous mountains and an apple orchard. Your visit will include time to browse the gift shop which showcases their award winning cheeses and possibly hear the Gregorian chants – Abbaye Saint-Benoit-du-Lac at St-Benoit du lac.
  • Chapter 2 – Manoir Bellechasse, featured in The Murder Stone and where Armand and Reine-Marie go each year for their anniversary. Soak in the grandeur of this beautiful historical Relais & Châteaux property on the shores of a lake originally named by the first nation. – Manoir Hovey at North Hatley.
  • Chapter 3 – A picturesque village on Lake Memphremagog is the inspiration for The Cruellest Month and the site of the ‘Old Hadley House’ featured in several books. Mr. Beliveau’s General Store and Saint-Thomas Church will also be part of your discovery.
  • Chapter 4 – The hearth of Three Pines, a village with a rich and fascinating heritage, colourful Victorian architecture, quaint shops and restaurants. A canvas of inspiration and of murder-solving for Armand. Your local raconteur will greet you and reveal the village’s heritage molded by both French immigrants and British Loyalists. Jane’s painting from Still Life featured in the movie Fair Days, awaits us, amongst other unique artifacts in the historical museum. You will also meet Lucy and Dany who are ready to welcome us with their big smiles (and shelves full of Louise’s books) at the famous Brome Lake Books. – Brome Lake Books at Brome Lake.
  • Chapter 5 – In a nearby village, nestled in gorgeous scenery, for a moment time stands still. Let’s relax as Armand, Clara, Myrna, Ruth and Reine-Marie do regularly, and have a glass of wine or cocktail (mocktail).

Louise Penny is a Canadian author known for her crime novels, primarily set in the province of Quebec. She lives in the Eastern Townships, where the setting for the investigations of her main character, Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec, takes place. The Three Pines crime series, adapted from the world of her novels, is set in an imaginary village in the Eastern Townships with the same name.
