Maison Merry
Dive into the history of the Eastern Townships by visiting the home of Magog’s founding family, the Merrys. Exhibitions, activities, and a wide range of events await!
Built in 1821 on a site rich in history (which includes an important Indigenous archaeological site), the Merry House has been a community memory site open to the public since 2018. Located near Lake Memphremagog, the large lake that separates Magog from Newport, Vermont, it offers an exceptional setting right in the heart of Magog.
On site, several options are available to enhance your experience: exhibitions, activities, guided tours, events, and an summertime English-style tea tasting served in period costume. The Merry House also offers room rentals, as well as English tea service for birthday celebrations.
EXHIBITIONS
Starting June 27, the Merry House invites you to discover Mapping Memory: Photographing Downtown Magog.
Since Prehistory, Lake Memphremagog has been the beating heart of the region. From ancestral Indigenous presence to more recent discoveries, its waters have shaped life, exchanges… and the imagination.
Explore its depths and legends: surprising artifacts, fascinating stories, and myths from the past come to light to tell the human history woven around its shores.
Extend your visit with the permanent exhibition The Merry House: A Wealth of History!
Blending technology and heritage, discover the history of Magog and its region, from Indigenous prehistory to the 1920s. Installed in the oldest part of the house, the exhibition transports you through period settings (1880 and 1920).
Through the home and the story of the Merry family, explore everyday life and the social, economic, and cultural changes that shaped Magog.
ABOUT THE MERRY HOUSE
Among the region’s first settlers in 1799, the Merry family helped develop downtown Magog, launched the first industries, and enabled many commercial exchanges thanks to the arrival of the train in town. Built in 1821 and surrounded by an Indigenous archaeological site several thousand years old, the Merry House has now been transformed into a community memory site. Owned by the City of Magog, it is managed by a non-profit organization, the Corporation de la maison Merry, and has been open to the public since 2018.
